Two injured in colliery explosion and fire

03 January 2012

Two security officers were seriously injured after an explosion and fire at a former colliery in Nottinghamshire on new year’s eve.

The blast happened at the Welbeck Colliery near Meden Vale in Nottinghamshire and involved an electrical sub-station above ground.

The men suffered facial burns and were reported in a critical but stable condition at the Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service responded to the incident at around 7.30 pm on Saturday 31 December with two appliances, a specialist rescue team, and a hazardous materials and environmental protection officer. They used two breathing apparatus units, a hose reel and a CO2 extinguisher to tackle the fire.

Police have been liaising with the site's owners, UK Coal, the fire service and the Health and Safety Executive to determine the sequence of events leading up to the incident.
