Teenager admits starting hotel fire

21 July 2010

An 18-year-old man has admitted starting a fire that caused the evacuation of a hotel in Cumbria earlier this year.

Appearing at Carlisle Crown Court this week, Carl McGuirk admitted being reckless as to whether life was endangered and causing arson.

The fire at Cumberland Hotel in April caused around £75,000 worth of damage.

An 82-year-old woman – a permanent resident – had to be lifted to safety by firefighters.

Mr McGuirk pleaded not guilty to the charge of arson with intent to endanger lives. He is to be sentenced on 16 August.
