System Sensor and eBay working together

30 November 2011

eBay data centre, Utah eBay's global operations demanded a reliable and redundant system

Robust and reliable servers are essential for almost all companies from SME’s to the biggest of internet giants, and few are bigger than eBay whose new Tier IV level data centre in South Jordan, Utah, has been protected with high-sensitivity System Sensor smoke detectors.

With huge banks of servers, even bigger cooling units, and generators to provide disaster protection, the need for reliable and redundant fire protection is imperative to ensuring that the eBay’s global operations can continue unhindered.

In order to achieve an energy saving of as much as 50 per cent when compared to other similar facilities, the fire and life safety system design was specified to use 50 per cent capacity loads.

This was achieved using several loops, which increased programming.

Boyd Ferrin, general manager for the fire side of Mountain Alarm, explained that “with numerous designated preaction zones, we had to make sure that if something happened in those areas, there was redundant protection and confirm that the formulas and calculations were accurate and written correctly in the programming – let alone the vast number of very early warning detectors used."
