Supermarket blaze disrupts town centre

01 August 2010

A Chinese supermarket was destroyed and flats above it damaged by a fire in Croydon's town centre.

Around 60 firefighters spent more than seven hours tackling the blaze, which broke out in the supermarket last Wednesday evening and spread up three floors to the roof of the building.

Nineteen people were forced to leave the affected buildings, with two people being treated on the scene for smoke inhalation.

The town’s tram service to East Croydon was suspended while crews fought the fire.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
