Students evacuated in university blaze - VIDEO

14 February 2012

Hundreds of people were forced to evacuate after a fire broke out in the University of York’s chemistry department.

Eleven fire crews and an aerial ladder platform were sent to the scene shortly before 1pm on 2 February. The fire was in the roof of the two-storey building and involved the ducting from a fume cupboard.

The fire was extinguished at around 4.00pm.

Fire investigation has been hampered by structural damage to the building and possible asbestos contamination, but the blaze was not thought to be suspicious.

A total of 300 sq m of damage was caused to the roof and ducting in the chemistry building.
