Students displaced by Oxford University blaze08 November 2011Students and staff were forced to evacuate part of Christ Church college, Oxford after a fire broke out last month. Around 20 firefighters attended the blaze on 13 October, which is believed to have broken out in a first floor bathroom in the four-storey building. The damage led to one section of the building – known as ‘Staircase 2’ - to be temporarily uninhabitable by its 16 occupants, according to student university newspaper, Cherwell. “The fire was caused by a faulty ceiling fan in a bathroom,” Christ Church steward Pauline Linières-Hartley told Cherwell. “The adjoining shower and some of the electrics were damaged. “There were students in the building at the time, but all were evacuated safely. Some will be spending two weeks in alternative Christ Church accommodation.” By Ron Alalouff 08/11/11 |
