Roof void fire spread to be examined

03 March 2010

Research into the spread of fire in the roof voids of apartment buildings is to be carried out by Exova Warringtonfire.

The study, commissioned by the Communities and Local Government department (CLG), follows several cases where fire has spread through roof voids – in spite of apparent compartmentation in those areas.

The research will include a review of current compartmentation building practices and an analysis of fires which have spread through voids. A report will make recommendations on potential changes in building regulations if appropriate.

The study will be carried out in association with approved inspectors Butler and Young, and as part of the CLG’s research programme supporting building regulations. The project is expected to be completed next month.
