Polish sausage fire "best smelling fire in a long time"

21 February 2012

Pennsylvania firefighters had a tasty problem when they attended a fire at a Polish sausage smokehouse on Monday.

The smokehouse was owned by retired meat cutter Cash Koszela, who has been smoking Polish sausages in a specially built smokehouse in his garden for 30 years now.

It’s thought that the 20ft squared building got slightly too hot causing grease to catch fire. The smokehouse itself could not be saved, but around 90kg of sausage were successfully rescued.

The kielbasa sausages only cooked for two of the three hours that they would normally need but Koszela said that the sausages appeared to be done and were not burnt.

Assistant fire chief David Joseph said, “This is definitely the best-smelling fire we’ve seen in a long time.”
