Non-compliance of prohibition notice leads to bakery's conviction

22 June 2010

A Salford bakery has had to pay almost £9000 after pleading guilty to three fire safety offences.

The directors of Rahat Bakers Ltd pleaded guilty to three charges under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005: failing to comply with a prohibition notice served on the premises; failing to ensure the safe use of escape routes; and failing to make a suitable and sufficient fire risk assessment.

The company was ordered to pay a fine of £5,625 and costs of £3,282.

Cllr Paul Shannon, vice chairman of Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Authority said: “We welcome the clear message from the courts that action will be taken against those businesses that neglect fire safety and thereby risk the safety of staff and the public. The fire authority is focussed on helping businesses operate safely and taking action when they don’t”.
