New Year’s fire guts five-star hotel in China - VIDEO

05 February 2011

A massive fire has destroyed a five-star hotel, in Shenyang, capital of northeast China's Liaoning Province.

The hotel was evacuated by around 50 people, according to local news source, Xinhuanet news.

The fire broke out in the early hours of 3 February, after fireworks set off to celebrate the Chinese New Year sparked against the exterior of the building.

Flames quickly spread through two towers in the high-rise complex, reports said.

Pump jets could not shoot water higher than 50 metres, though the building was 219 metres tall. It is one of the tallest structures in the city.

According to the Daily Mail, New Year fires are common for the country, with more than 160 fires reported in Shenyang this year.

There have been questions about the quality of materials used in the building boom in China and the first view of this fire which appears to have spread up the outside of the building suggests that the fire resistance of the cladding leaves something to be desired, not the first time this has occurred. There was a fire in Korea last year reported here I think and I know of fires in timber housing in Canada where fire spread because of the use of flammable "siding".
