New Kitemark scheme for voice alarm loudspeakers

29 December 2010

A new certification scheme for loudspeakers used in voice alarm systems and manufactured to EN 54-24:2008 has been launched by BSI.

The new scheme complements that for voice alarm control and indicating equipment (EN 54-16:2008) already provided by BSI.

In order to comply with EN 54-24, loudspeakers need to meet frequency response limits, sound pressure levels and durability requirements and undergo a range of environmental tests, after which certain tests are repeated to determine satisfactory performance after exposure to extreme environmental conditions.

To ensure satisfactory audio performance there is additional testing of the voice alarm control and indicating equipment to EN 54-16 that measures output power against the manufacturer’s declared rating, the signal to noise ratio and checks on frequency response of a unit with or without a microphone.
