A new guide to the technology and application of video smoke detection has been published by the Fire Industry Association (FIA).
Typically, video smoke detection systems consist of video based analytical smoke recognition algorithms that integrate cameras with fire detection systems. Proprietary software is used to process the image from the camera to detect the presence of smoke.
The guide consists of an introduction to video smoke detection (VSD), the types and configurations of systems available, the key benefits of the technology, the main applications where it is used and the relevant standards. It also highlights those situations where video smoke detection is not recommended as the prime means of detection.
“Although it has been in use for a number of years, until recently VSD was still seen as an emerging technology,” says the FIA. “Research into this area continues and few commercial systems are available, but it is increasingly becoming a recognised solution for both interior and exterior applications, particularly those which are difficult to protect with the more conventional technologies.”
