New fire risk assessor professional register launched

28 November 2011

A new register of fire risk assessors which will recognise certification schemes that have UKAS accreditation has been launched by the Institute of Fire Safety Managers (IFSM).

The Nationally Accredited Fire Risk Assessors Register of the Institute of Fire Safety Managers (NAFRAR) will recognise applicants who have been certificated by any scheme that is accredited by UKAS, or which follows BS EN ISO 17024 and BS EN 45011. This includes the Fire Risk Assessors Competency Scheme run by Warrington Certification, for which IFSM has negotiated a special rates for its members.

IFSM secretary general, Bob Docherty, said the institute recognised that the time had come to start moving towards a more professional and competency-based fire risk assessors register.

“We are the first professional body in the fire sector to take action to provide [a register] which contains the names of fire risk assessors who have been through a process which is accredited by an independent, nationally recognised accreditation body, to provide third party type accreditation/certification, preferably by UKAS.

“The UKAS link is important for us in the promotion of a national independent register, as it signals government support.”

The new register will be open for applications on 1 December and from that date, no further applications to join the current IFSM register will be accepted. Members of the current register will be invited to apply to the new register until 31 December 2013, at which point the current register will be closed.

In June a cross-industry body published a draft document, Competency Criteria for Fire Risk Assessors setting out criteria that could be used by professional bodies and third party certification bodies to register or certificate fire risk assessors and organisations providing fire risk assessment services.

Warrington Certification has been working very hard over the last two years trying to engage with professional and trade bodies on the issue of standardising existing fire risk assessor registers through accredited certification. The IFSM have been very positive in their approach to this and have taken a forward thinking step; guiding their members towards nationally recognised certification of competence/quality that carry real value for the responsible person

As someone who is looking to get onto an Assessors Register in the future I am confused by this para. Does thismean I an everyone else will be barred from being a 'proper' assessor?

Having completed a 4day FRA course held by the FPA at the Fire Service Training Centre - Morton in Marsh which is IFE accredited. Will this be recognised for the new Register please?

I like Rob Slater am confused as to whether or not I will be able to gain accreditation in the future. I am an ex Fire Safety Officer with the SFPO course from M in Marsh and also have NEBOSH qualification. my company has been operational for 3years I find my customers do not ask for accreditation, but I welcome a single professional register and would hope my 20+ years of Fire Safety and 30 years of fire fighting would permit me to register?

Hi Rob, nobody is 'barred' I dont know why you should be reading it that way, all IFSM have done is launch a register that recognises third party accreditation for competency. The current register continues but anyone wishing to register with the IFSM from now will have to prove competency by going through a third party accredited scheme. If you go to the IFSM website www.ifsm.org.uk and read all the guidance information about NAFRAR this explains it in much more detail. Hope that helps
