Major blaze at Tyrrells crisp factory

21 April 2011

More than 50 firefighters and 10 appliances have tackled a fire at a crisp factory in Herefordshire.

Crews were called to the Tyrrells Crisps factory near Leominster soon after 12.30 pm on Monday.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used hose reel jets and main jets along with a water carrier and aerial ladder platform to help bring the fire under control.

The fire was successfully contained to one area of the 70m x 30m building in the mezzanine and roof space, and was brought under control by around 4.00pm. No one was injured in the fire.

A spokesperson for Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service said:

“The good news for Tyrrells Crisps is that the prompt actions of the fire service combined with having good business continuity plans in place has meant minimal disruption to production, enabling Tyrrells Crisps to continue supplying their customers.”

Tyrrells marketing director Oliver Rudgard told the Shropshire Star:

“The exact cause of the fire is under investigation by our team here. However, our manufacturing capability has been unaffected due to the localised nature of the fire.

“It is strange that it has taken place in a store and not the frying room where the crisps are actually made, but our smoke alarms went off straight away.”
