Lakanal House delay prompts official complaint02 December 2011Relatives of those who died in the fire at Lakanal House in Camberwell in July 2009 have made an official complaint to the Metropolitan Police commissioner about the delay in the investigation. In a video interview on BBC News, a lawyer acting for the relatives said that after having been told in July 2011 that the police investigation was nearing completion, it would not be completed for next pre-inquest hearing due on 16 December. Until the police investigation is completed, the inquest cannot proceed. The Metropolitan Police responded that the delays were the result of a complex investigation which is ongoing. Meanwhile, two and a half years after the fire, Lakanal House itself remains empty and a crime scene. |
