James Dyson star Plumis on automatic domestic fire suppression

13 October 2010

Plumis will demonstrate Automist, its new fire protection system, at Firex North later this month.

Recently named one of the top 15 inventions of the last decade in an exhibition at the British library as well as scooping the prize for top invention for last year’s James Dyson award, Automist has been designed to integrate “seamlessly” into residential properties.

The device is intended for use in “fire-prone” locations like kitchens and laundry rooms, as well as to protect exit routes.  Automist’s high-pressure under-sink pump is triggered by a heat alarm, with water mist nozzles mounting under the existing mixer tap.

A spokesman for the product said: “Automist was validated by Plumis when it ran one of the most comprehensive test programmes ever run on a mist product at BRE Global in Watford. The Automist system displayed an improvement in the room heat and asphyxiant gas conditions, and a reduction in fire damage in all the tests conducted in which an unsuppressed equivalent scenario was compared. The tests demonstrated the benefits of having the Automist for improving both survivability and damage limitation.”

James Dyson said of the device: “This simple but clever device should become a permanent safety feature in the home. Smoke alarms are essential part of modern life but have remained fundamentally unchanged for forty years. Automist not only detects a fire but can put it out as well.”
