Industrial dry cleaner blaze damages business park

27 January 2012

Sixty firefighters tackled a blaze on an industrial estate which left three units damaged.

Crews were called to Lulworth Business Centre in Totton at 1.30am on Friday 20 January after the fire broke out at premises of an industrial dry cleaner. Eight appliances, two hose reels, two jets and an aerial ladder platform monitor were used to extinguish the fire. The blaze was under control just before 5.15am.

A 400 sq m two-storey industrial unit made of brick and sandwich panels was 80% fire damaged. Another unit had 20% damage with a third 10% damaged, both from smoke.

“Firefighters gained access to the premises using specialist cutting equipment and crews ventilated the premises,” said Dan Tasker, group manager at Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service. “The blaze was tackled using a combination of dowsing the flames from above with the aerial ladder platform monitor, and traditional methods on the ground."

“Firefighters worked extremely hard to contain the fire to the unit of origin and did a sterling job in stopping the fire from spreading to the neighbouring two units,”

An investigation is being carried out to find the cause of the fire.
