A huge fire near the BBC’s television centre is causing transport chaos and a huge plume of smoke across West London, this morning.

The fire at a former Unigate factory is being attended by over 75 firefighters at present and the cause is so far unknown.

Speaking with BBC News, a sales assistant from an Esso petrol station on Wood Lane said, "The fire brigade evacuated more than 100 people.

"The fire took place around the back of the Unigate factory. It is a multiple factory so a lot of people work there... they have closed the road and not a single person is allowed down here. There is lots of thick, dark smoke."

Wood Lane has been closed to traffic as has the A40, a major access road in and out of Central London, and the two underground stations in the area, White City and Wood Lane, were also closed.

A stretch of London’s Overground network is also part suspended in the area.

London Fire Brigade station manager Rod Horton, who is at the scene said, “The fire is affecting a range of industrial buildings on the dairy site. It’s a challenging and developing incident at the moment and we’re likely to be at the scene for some time.”

Gas cylinders

Firefighters announced via twitter at around 1pm they had found one acetylene cylinder at the site of the Wood Lane fire, and were cooling it to make it safe. They are expected to be at the scene for the rest of the day.

The fire is estimated to cover an area of around 170x25m.
