High winds contribute to severity of industrial fires

19 November 2009

Fires at a portable buildings storage depot in Cornwall and at a fencing manufacturer in Somerset were made more severe by this week's strong winds.

In Cornwall, around 50 firefighters were involved in a fire at a portable toilets storage depot near Newquay. More than 150 of the units, three lorries and some trailers were destroyed.

The combination of toxic fumes from burning plastic and smoke from diesel fuel led to homes nearby being evacuated. No one was hurt and the cause of the fire is being investigated.

Meanwhile in Somerset, more than 50 firefighters tackled a blaze at a large industrial unit in Shepton Mallet. According to one report, the fire broke out in a kiln used for drying timber. When the building became unstable firefighters moved to contain the fire. More than 40 m2 of the building was destroyed but there were no reports of any injuries. The cause of the fire is being investigated.
