Halogen heater caused shopping parade blaze

23 February 2010

The cause of a fire in Exmouth which spread to neighbouring properties in a parade of shops has been identified as a halogen heater which ignited combustible material.

Around 100 firefighters tackled the blaze on 28 January, which spread to properties on both sides of the shop and to a number of flats. As a result, part of the town centre was closed off for most of the day.

The heater was situated in the stockroom of the Bargains Galore shop in the town centre.

George Setter of Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service’s fire investigation support team said:

“Using a variety of additional heating appliances is to be expected during cold weather. This unfortunate incident highlights the dangers of their use which can be so easily overlooked. Everyone who benefits from their use must be aware of the potential they have to ignite combustible materials adjacent to them.”
