Firefighters tackle fuel and vehicle blaze

11 February 2010

Around 50 firefighters tackled a blaze involving at least three fuel tanks as well as a number of propane cylinders, mobile homes and vehicles.

Fire crews were called to the yard of a farm in Abridge, Essex at around 9.15pm last Saturday. The three tanks were reported to have contained around 30,000 litres of chrysene.

Crews used one main jet and foam to tackle the fire, which was extinguished around four hours later.

Incident commander Mark Samuels said: "Crews worked in arduous conditions as they dealt with four fuel tanks, numerous vehicles, tyres, timber, cylinders and a number of mobile homes on fire.

"Various cylinders involved in the fire exploded and an exclusion zone was set up. Crews from [Essex County Fire and Rescue Service] and London Fire Brigade did an excellent job preventing the fire from spreading.”
The cause of the fire is being investigated.
