Firefighters still at scene of wood chippings fire after three days

16 April 2010

Firefighters tackling a blaze in a 100m2 pile of wood chippings were still at the scene checking for smouldering debris more three days after the fire started.

Crews were called to recycling company Wood Knot Waste, in Iver, at 8pm on Monday, where a large pile of chippings was well alight by the time they arrived.

At its peak, there were more than 40 firefighters at the scene, where it took 16 hours for most of the fire to be put out.

Firefighters used ground monitors and jets to try to contain the blaze, which initially affected about 20% of the pile. The blaze destroyed about 40%t of the wood, according to crews.

Greg Smith, incident commander for Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “On arrival, crews were faced with a well-developed fire in an extensive pile of wood chippings, estimated at over 100,000 cubic metres.

“Our priority was to secure a sustained water supply in order protect surrounding buildings by drawing water from the nearby canal and using a hose-laying appliance to lay a line of hose from a fire hydrant some distance away.”
