Fire systems at flagship Cardiff store

18 October 2009

Beam detection and air sampling systems are among a range of fire safety equipment installed at the new 280,000 ft2 John Lewis store in the St David's shopping centre in Cardiff.

The installation of the fire systems in what is the largest John Lewis store outside London  has been carried out by Bristol based Mat Fire Systems.

The fire detection and alarm system comprises a network of addressable control panels, beam detection, air sampling systems and almost 900 devices. It allows for the variations between trading and non-trading conditions via a key switch.

Apollo XP95 optical smoke detectors have been used throughout the store. These are supported by aspirating detection within air handling ducts in the shape of the Air Sense HSSD2 system.  A combination of aspirating detection and beam detectors from the Fire Beam Company cover the atrium areas, with the self-adjusting technology of the latter being suitable for this area with its limited accessibility.

In addition, Mat Fire Systems provided an extensive store PA system supplied by Baldwin Boxall, with speakers from Penton.  The system enables messages to be broadcast throughout the store or in selected zones only.
