Fire spreads through Exmouth parade of shops

01 February 2010

More than 100 firefighters tackled a blaze which spread through neighbouring properties in Exmouth town centre.

The fire is believed to have started in a store room of a shop shortly before 1.00pm last Thursday, and then spread to neighbouring properties on both sides and to a number of flats. Part of the town centre was closed off for most of the day.

Up to 20 pumps, two hydraulic platforms and an aerial ladder platform were involved in tackling the fire, as well as an incident support unit and incident command vehicle.

No injuries were reported and a crew was still checking for hotspots some 15 hours after the alarm was raised. Some of the residents affected had to spend the following nigh in temporary accommodation.
