Fire risk seminars to address priorities in social housing

20 July 2010

Implementing a fire risk strategy on a tight budget is one of the areas to be addressed in a series of upcoming seminars across the country.

The seminars - to held later this summer and organised by RiskBase - will look at how to realistically prioritise work on social housing to bolster fire safety - with advice particularly geared towards organisations that have large portfolios.

Key speakers will include fire risk assessor for Homes for Haringey, John Bone, and Paul Womack, a former firefighter who has worked in fire risk training for the past 15 years.

Adam Sanders of fire risk software company, RiskBase, said: “The focus on the seminars is strategy, we’ve all seen and heard stuff going on about how assessments should look and what the legislation tells us should be done, best practices and new British Standards -  but this stuff can’t happen overnight.

“Larger organisations need to start prioritising and costing remedial work to reduce risk more effectively. The variation in approach to risk assessment, risk scoring and determining the best remedial actions adds significantly to the administrative burden, to the cost of procurement and the quality of the end result.”

The first of the seminars is to be held in London, 28 July, at the IBM building in Southbank. A second seminar will take place at the Novotel Manchester Central on 30 July.
