Fire glazing system installed in iconic boat-shaped building

17 November 2010

A building designed to look a boat in Cambridgeshire has been fitted with fire-resisting glazing and fire doors by Wrightstyle.

The Boathouse, a mixed-use structure, makes up part of a 20-acre development owned by fenland District Council, which sits on the banks of the river Nene, in Wisbech.

The building, designed by architects Feilden and Mawson LLP,  was given wide-bay curtain walling and a faceted configuration - despite problems posed by salt corrosion and harsh weather conditions.

Derelict for 20 years, the site is now a tourist attraction for the town and was highly commended in the most recent RICS awards.

Fire safety was not compromised, however, Wrightstyle’s technical director, said. “The Boathouse involved some real design challenges, to develop and fabricate a fire safety solution for a completely unique building design.” said Lee Coates. “However, we have the capability to meet the most exacting of designs – a reputation that is winning us business around the world.

“Good design is at the heart of all successful regeneration projects, helping to transform and enhance the built environment while offering leisure and working facilities that meet changing expectations.

“When it comes to regenerative projects, we are now recognised as a supplier able to design and fabricate complex or large spans of glazing with optically-brilliant glass, and giving comprehensive protection against all natural and man-made threats,” said Lee Coates.
