FIA launches best practice guide to fire safety in commercial premises16 June 2011The Fire Industry Association (FIA) has published a best practice guide to fire safety in commercial premises. It aims to help persons responsible for fire safety in commercial premises understand their duties with regards to fire legislation in England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. “The association understands that fire law can often be complex and confusing”, a press release from the FIA said, “so this guide has been designed as a user-friendly document which can be referred to alongside, not in replace of, the legislation.” The guide can be downloaded free from the FIA website www.fia.uk.com, or by clicking here. The 27-page guide discusses the responsible person’s legal duties and includes a five-step guide to fire risk assessments followed by a breakdown of various protective measures, which include fire detection and alarm systems, means of escape, emergency lighting and signage as well as fire fighting equipment. It comes after the Chief Fire Officers Association published a similarly focussed guidance document that has been developed for both enforcers and end users.
