Eight people have been injured – four of them seriously – after an explosion and fire at an industrial estate.
Surrey firefighters were called to the blaze at the Hobbs industrial estate in Newchapel, near Lingfield, at around 11:30am on Monday.
At the height of the fire, around 60 firefighters were tackling the blaze and 12 fire engines were in attendance, with help from East and West Sussex fire services.
Up to 30 paramedics attended the scene and eight people were taken to hospital. One casualty was airlifted to a London hospital, five were admitted to the East Surrey Hospital and two were taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital.
Surrey Fire and Rescue Service said the fire was finally under control overnight but that firefighters were still damping down hotspots on Tuesday. It said there were gas cylinders at the site, which made progress ‘difficult’.
On Tuesday afternoon, it was still not safe for firefighters to enter the building .
