Early warning on Moscow metro system

11 August 2009

Aspirating smoke detection has been installed at around 40 train stations on Moscow's metro system. Ustela installed approximately 400 Xtralis Vesda systems under escalators and passenger platforms, in cable tunnels and in high-voltage generator and switch rooms.

The systems continuously sample air to get the earliest possible warning of a fire hazard, increasing the time available to investigate an alarm and initiate a response.

According to Xtralis, from 1 May this year the Russian Government added air-sampling smoke detection to its national fire code (National Standard GOST R 53325-2009 and Set of Rules SP 5.13130.2009), allowing Russian organisations to select it as their primary means of fire detection and protection.
