Diners flee after fire breaks out in flats above restaurant

20 May 2010

Around 35 firefighters attended a blaze in flats that threatened to spread to an Italian restaurant in London’s Exmouth Market on Wednesday.

Crews were called to the four-storey building around 3.30pm armed with pump appliances and six fire engines.

Diners had to be evacuated from the Strada restaurant, based on the ground floor of the building, while residents living in the flats above also had to flee.

Part of the third floor and roof of the building were damaged, according to London Fire Brigade.

The cause of the blaze is not yet known but it is thought it started in one of the flats. It was mostly under control by 7pm and is now being investigated by police.
