Ten fire crews have tackled a large fire at a landfill site in Wiltshire.
Some 100 sq metres of plastic sheeting covering the site near Calne caught fire early on Saturday morning. The fire was especially difficult to tackle as it was located on a steeply sloped section of the landfill, and needed two specialist rope rescue teams to help secure firefighters safely.
Eight pumping appliances, two water carriers, an emergency support unit, a control unit and a bulk foam carrier also attended the fire. Staff from the operator of the site, Hills Waste Solutions, discovered the fire and put an emergency plan into action.
Firefighters spent the whole day at the scene to ensure the fire did not spread to underground landfill material. There were no injuries and no environmental impact was reported.
