Crews battle fire at historic building for six hours

16 September 2010

Fire crews battled overnight to extinguish a fire at a listed property on Saturday night.

Valency House, which dates from the 19th century and was used in the Cold War by NATO, was well alight by the time crews got to the scene around 11pm.

The fire had spread to all three floors as well as the roof. At around 1am part of the roof collapsed. Nobody was harmed as the property was undergoing renovation and had no occupants. The neighbouring property was evacuated though no damage done to the building.

Firefighters used an aerial ladder platform and mobilised an incident command unit to tackle the blaze. The fire, which blazed for around six hours, was mostly out by 5.30am. Crews stayed throughout Sunday to monitor hotspots.

An investigation into the cause is ongoing.
