'Cause and effect' alarms for stunning campus building

18 June 2010

Dante Fire & Security has installed a complex Notifier by Honeywell fire alarm system in the newly-built Middlehaven Campus for Middlesbrough College in North Yorkshire.

The building is designed to represent a hull of a ship and the wave it causes

The £68m campus ,which covers 32,000 m2 , has a diverse range of facilities including, hair and beauty salons, a sports hall, a health and fitness suite, a theatre, a library, construction workshops, and cafes.

The building, which is made up of two main parts known as the Hull and the Wave, is linked by an atrium, or the ‘Street,’ with a transparent roof. Four ID 3000 fully addressable alarm panels were specified for the atrium and security office, together with a repeater panel in the main entrance foyer. The panels were connected over an ID2net intelligent network, with 20 loop sounder systems in total throughout the building.

The system is programmed with ‘cause and effect’ criteria which includes a requirement for staged evacuation.

Notifier’s managing director for the UK and Ireland, John Brandwood, said: “The building is designed to represent the hull of a ship and the wave it causes as it moves through the water.

"As a result, the life safety systems had to be adapted from the initial design to meet the specific and unusual needs of the building’s large and deep plan design, with a long narrow ‘hull’ forming the front elevation."

Dante installed Notifier AVAX sounders, supplementing them with visual alarms for deaf and hard of hearing students.
