Arson charges after fuel tanker crashes into bungalow

25 January 2012

A driver of a fuel tanker has been charged with a number of offences after the vehicle crashed into a bungalow setting the property alight.

Hugh Billington, 51, appeared at Weymouth Magistrates’ Court on Monday 23 January accused of two counts of arson, assault by beating, dangerous driving and theft.

Dorset Fire and Rescue Service had been called to the bungalow in Wool at around 8.45am on Friday 20 January. Six appliances and around 30 firefighters tackled the blaze using two hose reel jets to extinguish the fire. The fire was under control just before 9:40am.

There were no reports of any injuries but the bungalow sustained significant damage. The female occupant is safe and well.
