50 firefighters tackle blaze - VIDEO

27 October 2011

As many as 50 firefighters tackled a blaze in a former furniture warehouse.

Fire crews from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service were called to the unoccupied building in Miles Platting on Friday 21 October at just before 5pm after reports of smoke coming from the premises.

Firefighters tackled the blaze at the three storey building, which measured 1,000 sq m, until 10.15pm when it was under control.

Fire crews prevented the fire spreading to adjacent properties. However, the fire caused extensive damage to the building which partially collapsed during the incident. A cordon was put in place to prevent any hazard to local residents, which included the closure of Oldham Road (A62).

The cause of the blaze is under investigation but early indications show that it was started deliberately.
