160 firefighters tackle major blaze in New York - VIDEO

25 May 2010

A huge fire in New York City has destroyed several businesses and resulted in 12 firefighters sustaining minor injuries.

US media sources say at least 160 firefighters tackled the blaze on Sunday night in the Queens district of the city. The fire is reported to have started in a deli, and spread quickly to other businesses, including two food stores and a laundrette. At one stage, firefighters had to rapidly withdraw as a roof caved in.

A neighbouring synagogue, from which religious artefacts were hurriedly retrieved, was slightly damaged by smoke.

The cause of the fire is being investigated but is not thought to be suspicious.
