150 flee Wandsworth tower block blaze19 August 2011A man had to be rescued from a fire that broke out in a block of flats last week. The 15-storey block, in Wandsworth, London, had to be evacuated of around 150 people after an apartment on the ninth floor caught fire. Around 40 firefighters tackled the fire and Andrew Reed House on 12 August. London Fire Brigade was called at 12.36 am and the blaze was under control within two hours. Fire crews rescued five people using the stairs and four people from the tenth floor with a turntable ladder within minutes of arriving. It was not connected with the London riots, officials confirmed. A man in his 40s was taken to hospital with smoke inhalation, the BBC said. The cause of the fire is under investigation. |
